Perspective on Open Source HIT Systems

Mr. Longman has a very interesting and sobering perspective on the decade old proprietary vs. open source software debate. We have seen it affect other markets, but how will it change healthcare? In my opinion, options breed competition. There is a place for both types in the healthcare sector, just like other businesses. Please give the article a read and feel free to comment.

Open Source = More refined and flexible product

Another example is Windows vs Linux. Linux being an open source means a larger community of developers can both benefit from existing codes, expand functionality by adding modules, tune-up/update with community-wide beta testers, and increased portability/interoperability to various different systems as well. It may seems that 'less' money can be made from open source but in reality you are producing better base for an overall product. An example of this is that most website are run on linux systems than on Windows based systems simply because it's more reliable.
